Position Overview The Area Supervisor manages one or more operational programs in the Transportation Department. This position is tasked with ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of school children in an operational program or programs. This position provides employee training, and oversees other programs as needed. Responsibilities Roles and Responsibilities The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:
• Manages day-to-day pupil transportation programs, as assigned.
• Develops routing for all students using software programs.
• Develops and implements routing, schedules, assignments and changes in routing software.
• Performs data maintenance, run analytical reports and track live routes.
• Works effectively with transportation routing software and technology staff to resolve problems between routing and student information systems.
• Establishes new bus stops, re-works bus runs and routes, and creates new runs/routes in response to new schools and changes in student and/or map data; coordinates work with school bus staff.
• Confers with operations staff and Lead Drivers to obtain information on actual run times in order to update run stops and times; provides bus stop time and bus number information to dispatch staff.
• Reads, interprets, and alters maps to provide direction, information and documentation for drivers and staff.
• Oversees and participates in continuous updates to runs and routes, oversees and participates in creating new runs for the upcoming school year.
• Communicates with Lead Drivers concerning various matters, including routes, special requirements, road conditions.
• Assists in preparing and providing information for State Reports. Qualifications Qualifications Below are the qualifications for this position:
• High School Diploma or GED required
• Virginia Commercial Driver
• s License with school bus endorsement preferred
• Three years of supervisory or management experience
• Experience in pupil transportation routing system software management
• Knowledge of GPS system interface with pupil transportation routing system
• Knowledge of school bus operations, traffic and highway safety rules and regulations, pupil transportation, personnel management and/or school fleet maintenance and management
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and parents; demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills; carry out written and oral instructions; and operate a two-way radio
• Possess strong time management and organizational skills
• Exhibit the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Essential Personnel Employees who perform the responsibilities of this position for the Department of Support Services are considered essential personnel. Essential personnel are designated employees who must report for work during a delay or emergency situations. A workplace emergency is an unforeseen situation that threatens the staff, pupils, or the public; disrupts or shuts down business operations; or causes physical or environmental damage. Emergencies may be natural or manmade. It is incumbent upon the supervisor to inform and confirm which essential personnel are required to work during emergency closings. Notification and confirmation of the expectation of essential personnel to report to work, or maintain as-needed status, will be executed with as much advanced notice as possible via in-person communication or email.
