Job Summary:We are seeking experienced and compassionate Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) to join NHS hospital mental health wards. You'll primarily provide 1:1 support to patients requiring close observation, along with general care duties. This role suits calm, empathetic individuals who thrive in a fast-paced clinical environment and are passionate about mental health care.
Key Responsibilities:1:1 Patient Support:
Supervise patients requiring constant observation due to risks such as self-harm or aggression. Maintain safety, build rapport, and offer reassurance in line with care plans.
Daily Living Support:
Assist patients with washing, dressing, eating, toileting, and mobility while respecting their dignity and promoting independence.
Monitoring & Reporting:
Record behaviour and mood observations, escalate concerns promptly, and complete documentation such as Level 1-4 observation charts.
Team Collaboration:
Work under the direction of nursing staff and contribute to a safe, supportive ward environment. Assist in handovers and maintain open communication with clinical teams.
Ward Duties:
Support general ward tasks including infection control, tidying, and maintaining a calm and therapeutic environment.
Requirements:Minimum 6 months of experience in healthcare, ideally in a hospital or mental health setting
Strong communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure
Genuine interest in supporting vulnerable adults and promoting mental wellbeing
Right to work in the UK (no sponsorship available)
PMVA or MAPA certificate, or willingness to complete prior to starting
Basic Life Support (BLS) and Mandatory Training certificates, or willingness to complete before placement
Enhanced DBS on the update service - desirable, as it speeds up onboarding (we can help with applications if needed)
Shifts & Locations:NHS mental health hospitals across [insert region/trust name]
Day and night shifts available (typically 12 hours: 07:00-19:30 or 19:00-07:30)
Weekday and weekend work
Flexible hours or block bookings depending on availability
Ideal Candidate Profile:Experience with mental health conditions such as psychosis, personality disorders, dementia, or autism
Comfortable working 1:1 with patients in challenging or high-risk situations
Confident using observation tools and following safeguarding protocols
Able to follow instructions, maintain boundaries, and work as part of a team
Physically and emotionally resilient
