Senior Mechanical Designer

Role Purpose

To design and deliver mechanical system elements for complex motion control and test systems, producing full manufacturing packages including drawings, bills of materials and supporting documentation. The role requires technical ownership of assigned work packages, with responsibility for delivering designs on time, to specification and cost.

Key Responsibilities

• Design mechanical “system elements” such as actuators, manifolds, bearings and load cells, often adapting existing designs.
• Produce complete manufacturing packages including GA drawings, detailed drawings, BOMs and associated data for procurement.
• Act as Lead Engineer on allocated work packages, managing scope, priorities, progress and technical queries.
• Ensure designs meet functional, regulatory and safety requirements (including UKCA / CE compliance).
• Apply Design for Manufacture, Assembly and Serviceability (DFMA).
• Support suppliers, production, service and project teams during build, test and commissioning phases as required.
• Participate in and lead design reviews, contributing to continuous improvement and design standardisation.
• Maintain project documentation including technical files and design trackers.
• Support risk assessments, manuals and improvement initiatives across the business.

Skills & Experience

• HND, Degree or equivalent experience in mechanical engineering.
• Significant experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing environment, ideally involving hydraulic or precision mechanical systems.
• Strong 3D CAD capability (SolidWorks preferred) and experience producing manufacturing drawings to relevant British Standards.
• Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis and material selection.
• Experience using MRP systems and managing BOMs.
• Ability to perform basic stress analysis and technical problem solving.
• Willingness to travel internationally on occasion.
