An exciting opportunity has arisen for an interim Private Sector Housing Officer within a Local Authority in the South East of England. This role is key in supporting the council’s work within the private rented sector, ensuring properties meet statutory standards and that tenants are protected under current housing legislation. You will play an important role in regulating Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), investigating housing complaints, and helping maintain safe and compliant housing across the borough.
You will join a small, supportive team responsible for enforcing housing standards, delivering licensing schemes and working closely with other services to improve outcomes for residents in the private rented sector.
Key duties:
• Manage HMO licence applications and ensure compliance with licensing conditions
• Conduct HMO and private sector property inspections
• Assess housing hazards using HHSRS
• Investigate tenant complaints, including disrepair
• Take enforcement action where required
• Handle cases involving harassment, illegal eviction and empty homes
• Support delivery of Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs) in line with legislation
• Maintain accurate records on internal systems
• Liaise with tenants, landlords and internal services to resolve issues
• Work closely with homelessness services on cross-service cases
• Manage and prioritise a varied caseload
Client requirements:
• HHSRS competency or qualification
• Experience inspecting HMOs
• Understanding of the Housing Act and renters’ rights
