Role Summary

The Site Hydrological Advisor will provide specialist hydrology, water management, and drainage expertise to support the successful delivery of the A9 dualling project near Perth. This role ensures that all construction activities align with hydrological design intent, regulatory requirements, environmental commitments, and best practice water management on a heavily constrained, high‑profile transport infrastructure scheme.

The advisor will work closely with engineering, environmental, and construction teams to manage surface water, groundwater, flood risk, watercourse protection, and compliance with SEPA, CAR licensing, and project environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities:

* Provide on‑site hydrological and water‑management expertise for all construction activities.

* Monitor and assess surface water and groundwater conditions throughout the project area.

* Advise on temporary and permanent drainage, SUDS, attenuation, and runoff management.

* Support and supervise water quality monitoring, including flow, turbidity, sampling, and inspections.

* Ensure compliance with SEPA regulations, CAR licences, and project environmental requirements.

* Review and input into Method Statements, RAMS, and water‑related environmental plans.

* Provide guidance during earthworks, culvert installations, watercourse works, dewatering, and bridge construction.

* Identify hydrological risks early and propose mitigation strategies to avoid environmental breaches.

* Support pollution prevention, spill response, and incident management on site.

* Coordinate with design and engineering teams on hydrology‑related technical constraints.

* Prepare clear hydrological reports, monitoring summaries, and compliance documentation.

* Communicate with SEPA, local authorities, landowners, and environmental stakeholders as required.

* Monitor weather forecasts and advise on programme, environmental, and safety impacts.

* Attend daily/weekly site coordination meetings to provide hydrology updates.

* Support the implementation of watercourse protection, erosion control, and sediment‑management systems.

Required Experience & Qualifications:

* Degree in Hydrology, Environmental Science, Hydrogeology, or Civil Engineering.

* Experience working on major civil engineering or transport infrastructure projects.

* Strong understanding of surface water, groundwater, drainage, SUDS, and flood risk management.

* Experience liaising with SEPA and managing environmental licensing (CAR or similar).

* Ability to interpret hydrological data, drainage drawings, environmental reports, and risk assessments.

* Hands‑on experience with water monitoring equipment and environmental sampling.

* Knowledge of erosion control, sediment management, and pollution prevention.

* Strong communication skills for advising site teams and technical stakeholders.

* Ability to work independently on a busy, fast‑moving construction site.

* CSCS card or equivalent site‑safety certification.

* Familiarity with Scottish environmental frameworks (desirable).

* Experience with GIS or hydrological modelling tools (desirable).
