Building Control Technician (x2)6-Month Contract | Possible Extension

Aatom Recruitment are seeking two Building Control Technicians to join a Local Authority Building Control team on a 6-month contract, with the potential for extension. This role offers a hybrid working arrangement, with 3 days working from home and 2 days based in the office.
You will play an important role in supervising building works across the borough, ensuring compliance with building control legislation, supporting enforcement activity, and delivering a professional, customer-focused service.
Job PurposeTo supervise a designated area within the borough to ensure compliance with all building control legislation.
You will assist with:
- Plan checking
- Site inspections
- Enforcement and compliance
- Marketing and service improvement
- Fee recovery
- Case management
- Supporting senior officers with detailed case information
Main Duties & ResponsibilitiesBuilding Control & Compliance- Assist in supervising a borough area to ensure compliance with:
- Building Act
- Building Regulations
- London Building Acts
- Tasks include plan assessments, calculation reviews, site inspections, identifying contraventions, preparing letters, and supporting enforcement (including court attendance).
- Advise applicants on statutory requirements affecting their proposals.
- Liaise with internal departments (e.g., Development Control, Environmental Health, Land Charges) and external agencies to ensure statutory consultations are completed.
- Support the assessment and recovery of building control fees, protecting the Council's financial interests.
Service Delivery & Customer Support- Promote the Council’s Building Control services during contact with clients and assist in service delivery initiatives.
- Respond to enquiries from the public, Councillors, MPs, and other stakeholders, providing accurate information and taking appropriate action.
- Maintain accurate administrative records including time monitoring, travel logs, and casework documentation. Update and process information on IT systems.
Projects & Complex Casework- Participate in projects and undertake any additional duties as required.
- Assist with complex buildings and make decisions that may significantly impact design and cost for clients.
- This requires a proactive, independent approach to problem solving within Council policies.
Work Context- Frequent lone working and regular site inspections are required, including working at heights (scaffolding, ladders) and entering excavations.
- Occasional exposure to noise, dust, and site conditions.
- You may be required to work across different teams as needed.
- The role operates within a competitive commercial environment, balancing public service duties with competition from private sector inspectors.

- Construction professionals
- London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA)
- Members of the public
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills & ExperienceEssential Qualifications- Degree in Construction, Surveying, or a related field leading toward corporate membership of RICS (or equivalent).
DesirableEssential KnowledgeCandidates must have basic knowledge in at least one of the following:
a) Building construction
b) Structural engineering
c) Fire safety in buildings
d) Supervision of building works on site
You must also demonstrate understanding of key legislation, including:
- Building Act 1984
- Building Regulations
- Ability to prepare reports, schedules and support enforcement action
