Principal Drainage / Flood Risk Engineer

The Principal Consultant / Engineer role is responsible for the delivery of projects ensuring the maintenance and enhancement of the company reputation with its clients (both internal and external to the organisation).

The role holder will be responsible for the Project Management of selected multi or single disciplinary projects. The role holder must take a proactive and 'hands on' approach to all aspects of the role. The role holder may also hold line management responsibilities.

Specifically the candidate will be involved with:

—Providing engineering, environmental and drainage support inputs into development masterplans;

—The design of sustainable drainage strategies for new developments;

—Managing the delivery of outline drainage design, hydraulic modelling and flood risk management to inform design processes;

—Development of strategic bids / input to multi-disciplinary bids;

—Authorship and technical review of input to Environmental Statements;

—Co-ordinating the delivery of services for our Local Authority clients, including:

—Acting as the statutory consultee for major planning applications;

—Providing advice in relation to strategic planning and preparing strategic planning documentation (SFRA's, SWMP's, etc.);

—The design and management of a range of flood alleviation schemes looking at the management of surface water, ground water and fluvial flood risk;

—Development of Cost Benefit analysis;

—Production of business cases for submission for Flood Defence Grant in Aid and Local Levy applications;

—Providing the project management and assistant project management roles for multi-disciplinary urban regeneration projects;

—Developing our relationships with our Private and Local Authority clients to expand the breadth and volume of services we provide.

It is envisaged that the role would be a mix public and private sector work and therefore the flexibility to respond to any appropriate opportunities that may present themselves or that your personal contacts may lead to is essential.


—Ensuring adherence to Company Health Safety;

—Engaging in proactive communication with our clients to continually ensure successful delivery to their expectations;

—Maintaining the highest levels of auditability on your projects;

—Delivery of projects to client agreed programme, quality and budgets;

—Actively contributing to the maintenance of utilisations for yourself and your project team(s);

—Seeking Client feedback and acting on it;

—Engaging in the technical and commercial development of the water team.

Manage and build relationships with key clients, capitalising on and enhancing existing personal client relationships of your own

—Participation in wider business initiatives as required, working alongside senior colleagues (including Directors) to continually develop our technical expertise and market position;

—In conjunction with other senior local colleagues (see below) forge strategic relationships with clients and co-professional partners.

—Excellent Technical Skill relating to:

—delivery of engineering and environmental solutions to flooding issues including;

—design of drainage;

—hydraulic modelling processes.

—Excellent knowledge of the following aspects:

—Requirements of the Floods and Water Management Act and how it applies to the Local Authority and Lead Local Flood Authority.

—Local Flood Risk Strategies

—Strategic Flood Risk Assessments

—Surface Water Management Plans

—National planning and Water Policy

—Sustainability and how it relates to the planning and flooding issues assessment process


—BEng / BSc (Hon) or equivalent discipline with solid post graduate experience;

—Member of associated Professional body;

—C. WEM and / or C.Eng preferred although not essential;

—Experience and proven ability to manage projects and teams;

—Experience of MS Office Suite of Programmes;

Comprehensive experience of technical design and associated discipline software.
