We are currently shortlisting for an exciting new leadership role in Further Education. If you are an experienced and passionate academic leader with a strong background in English curriculum management, we would love to hear from you.

Head of Department - English (16-18)
This full-time, permanent role offers a competitive salary of £55,000-£70,000 including applicable weighting.

The Head of Department will be responsible for the growth, quality and performance of the English 16-18 provision, ensuring high standards in teaching, learning, assessment and curriculum planning. You will work closely with senior leadership to drive strategic development, respond to sector trends, and ensure the curriculum meets local needs.

Key Responsibilities:

*

Lead strategic and operational development across the department.

*

Develop and maintain a relevant, responsive curriculum offer.

*

Strengthen quality assurance systems and ensure compliance with internal and external standards.

*

Promote excellence in teaching, learning and assessment, including leading teacher development.

*

Hold curriculum leaders accountable and embed a strong performance culture.

*

Drive positive cultural change in line with organisational values.

*

Deliver the annual quality cycle, including observations, standardisation, performance monitoring, RARPA, verification, and inspection readiness.

*

Support self-assessment processes, SARs, QIPs and related staff training.

*

Improve KPIs including attendance, retention and achievement.

*

Lead curriculum planning and promotional activity to support income targets.

Essential Criteria:

*

Management experience in Adult or Further Education.

*

Understanding of external frameworks, inspections and awarding body requirements.

*

Experience delivering curriculum that meets local and sector needs.

*

Proven success leading change and improving performance.

*

Strong analytical, motivational and team-leadership skills.

*

Effective collaboration with partners and colleagues.

This role includes 4 hours of teaching per week.
