A great opportunity has arisen for a process safety minded HSE Lead to join a leading pharmaceutical / chemical company in the area.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and day-to-day direction on EHS matters for the Mirfield site
- Act as the lead EHS practitioner, executing the site EHS plan and managing EHS Advisors
- Promote best practice and continuous improvement in EHS performance
- Maintain detailed working knowledge of relevant EHS legislation, including COMAH, DSEAR, COSHH, PUWER, ALARP, human factors and control system integrity
- Lead and drive site programmes to ensure regulatory compliance, working closely with engineering, operations and leadership teams
- Develop, implement and continuously improve robust safety management systems covering:
- Change Management
- Contractor Management
- Safe Work Permits
- Emergency Planning
- Monitoring, audit and review
- Support engineering and new product development by ensuring new projects are safety-assessed prior to operation
- Establish and maintain effective operational controls and standard operating procedures
- Manage and report EHS performance metrics, using data to drive improvement
- Ensure incidents are thoroughly investigated, root causes identified and corrective actions implemented
- Champion a culture of transparent reporting, employee engagement and shared ownership of EHS improvement
- Share best practice across UK sites and with the wider organisation
- Primary point of contact for the Health & Safety Executive and Environment Agency
- Responsible for all EHS-related regulatory reporting and COMAH engagement
- Liaison with emergency services, local authorities and planning bodies
- Ensure EHS standards are embedded through clear role ownership and training
- Provide coaching and functional guidance to those performing EHS-related roles
- Work in partnership with production, engineering and functional managers to build site capability and ownership of EHS delivery
- IOSH and Process Safety training qualifications desirable but not essential
Beneficial Skills / Qualifications:
- Educated to degree level, preferably in an engineering, chemical, scientific or technical discipline
- Holds a recognised Health & Safety qualification meeting HSE “competent person” requirements (e.g. NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent)
- Up-to-date knowledge of UK EHS legislation and regulations
- Proven experience overseeing EHS activities within a chemical or manufacturing environment
- COMAH site experience with regular interaction with HSE and Environment Agency
- Understanding of process safety and safe introduction of new processes
- Demonstrated success in improving EHS culture through training and workforce development
- Knowledge of REACH regulations
- Strong project management and change management experience
- Proactive and self-motivated with strong initiative
- Able to influence, engage and lead change at all organisational levels
- Strong interpersonal, communication and team-working skills
- Comfortable operating both strategically and in a hands-on capacity
- Well-organised with strong planning and project execution ability
- Confident interpreting and applying HSE guidance and ACOPs
