About the Role
The London Borough of Lewisham is seeking a dedicated and skilled Tenancy Management and Resettlement Officer to join their Housing Needs Service on a 12-month contract. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping to ensure tenants in the private rented sector have secure, sustainable housing, while also supporting efforts to reduce homelessness in the borough. You'll be working within a dynamic team to provide tenancy sustainment support, promote private rented housing options, and liaise with both landlords and tenants to maintain housing stability.
Key Responsibilities
Work within the private rented sector to increase the availability of good quality accommodation for households in housing need.
Conduct property inspections to ensure housing meets the required standards and complies with regulations.
Assess customer suitability for private rented accommodation and assist with viewings, providing expert advice on tenancy conditions and housing benefits.
Act as a mediator and negotiator between landlords and tenants to resolve disputes and sustain tenancies.
Provide comprehensive tenancy sign-up and sustainment services to ensure that tenancies are effectively maintained.
Offer advice and guidance on the various letting schemes that Lewisham Council operates and help tenants settle into their new homes.
Liaise with colleagues, other departments, and external agencies to ensure a smooth and effective service.
Administer cash incentives and bond payments, ensuring all financial transactions are accurately processed.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience working in tenancy management or a related field, ideally with experience in the private rented sector and/or local authorities. You will be a proactive, customer-focused individual who is able to negotiate, mediate, and maintain strong working relationships with landlords, tenants, and colleagues. Familiarity with housing regulations, tenancy sustainment, and welfare reforms will be essential. A good understanding of the challenges facing homeless households and a passion for making a positive impact in the community are key.
Essential Skills and Experience
Experience in tenancy management, resettlement services, or a related housing field.
Strong understanding of the private rented sector and housing legislation.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Ability to work under pressure and meet targets.
Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and reporting.
Experience of working within local authorities or with vulnerable households is desirable.
