The Role: Key Responsibilities
As a Rail Transport Planner, you’ll play a crucial role in the day-to-day management of rail freight services. Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning and coordinating daily rail freight services across multiple terminals
- Monitoring rail service progress and responding to real-time operational issues
- Liaising with rail operators, terminal teams, road planners and customers to maintain service performance
- Ensuring compliance with safety procedures, rail regulations, and operational protocols
- Managing train paths, timings, loading plans, and service documentation
- Maximising asset utilisation (locomotives, wagons, terminal equipment)
- Maintaining accurate system updates and supporting the generation of operational reports
- Proactively identifying issues and implementing solutions to keep services on schedule
About You
We’re particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:
- Previous experience working within rail operations, rail freight, or a rail-connected logistics role
- Strong communication and coordination skills within a safety-critical environment
- Excellent organisational ability and attention to detail
- Confidence managing multiple services simultaneously under tight time constraints
- Good understanding of rail industry regulations, operating procedures, and train planning principles
- IT proficiency — rail/transport systems, planning software, Microsoft Office
- A proactive, solutions-driven mindset and positive approach to teamwork
Experience within intermodal or combined rail-and-road freight operations is highly desirable.
