Rate: £75 p/h (Principal) | £60 p/h (Surveyor) – Inside IR35 (Umbrella)

Hybrid: Minimum 3 days per week on-site (office or designated workplace). Friday attendance required. Earliest start time 7:30am.

A Local Authority in the East Midlands is seeking two interim specialists , a Building Control Surveyor and a Principal Building Control Surveyor to support and strengthen their Building Control service. These roles play a vital part in ensuring buildings across the authority area meet the highest standards of safety, compliance, and regulatory performance.

Key Duties


• Ensure building design and construction complies with the Building Regulations, Building Act 1984, and all relevant technical standards


• Assess and inspect applications including Full Plans, Building Notices, Regularisation, and Reversion submissions, preparing detailed action schedules and negotiating compliance with applicants


• Lead or support enforcement activity relating to dangerous structures, unauthorised works, contraventions, and demolition control, including preparation of evidence for legal proceedings


• Undertake statutory and technical site inspections, maintain accurate records, and meet required KPIs and statutory deadlines


• Support or lead (depending on grade) a team of operational Building Control Surveyors, promoting high performance and excellent customer service


• Provide specialist advice on complex developments, corporate projects, and high-risk buildings in line with the BSR Competency Framework


• Conduct annual safety inspections for venues affecting public safety


• Liaise with architects, contractors, developers, statutory bodies, and stakeholders to ensure regulatory compliance


• Work flexibly to meet service demands, including extended hours or participation in an out-of-hours dangerous structures rota where necessary

Requirements


• Registered with, or working towards registration with the Building Safety Regulator (Part 2A of the Building Act 1984)


• Competence aligned to Class 2 A–F under the BSR Building Inspector Competency Framework (higher levels desirable for the Principal role)


• Strong technical knowledge of construction methods, materials, and building standards


• Ability to interpret architectural plans, produce technical reports, and manage site inspections effectively


• Excellent stakeholder communication skills


• Confident use of ICT systems for documentation and workflow management


• Relevant qualifications: Level 4/5 (Surveyor) or degree/equivalent (Principal). Membership of RICS or CABE is essential


• Strong organisational skills, accuracy, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
