Description of Department: The Office of Learning Services (OLS) provides supplemental peer tutoring for courses taught primarily at the 100-200 level. Professional staff work alongside with tutors to provide assistance to users of the services. In addition, two Student Academic Success Specialists provide support to first-year students on academic probation. A third component to OLS is our participation in the "Success in Undergraduate Math and Sciences" (SUMS) grant, designed to enhance support for the STEM disciplines. We work to promote intellectual integrity, honesty, independence, and confidence by helping students to develop academic skills and methods. It is our hope that students will use these skills as they advance through their academic, professional, and personal endeavors.





The Office of Learning Services at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications for a full-time, 12 month Math Specialist position.

Description of Responsibilities:





The Math Specialist in the Office of Learning Services will:







+ Teach two math courses per semester primarily for the Educational Opportunity Program.



+ Assist in the coordination of the EOP summer math curriculum and instruction in conjunction with the Math Placement Coordinator; teach one math section of the four-week EOP summer program.



+ Assist with the recruiting, hiring and training of a diverse staff of peer tutors in the math and science disciplines; design and deliver the tutor training curriculum specific to the math and science disciplines.



+ Assist with the development and implementation of assessment tools to evaluate effectiveness and identify areas of improvement for the Tutoring Centers.



+ Engage in ongoing collaboration and communication with academic departments, Math Placement Coordinator, EOP Director, and all OLS specialty areas.



+ Provide support to the peer tutors, tutees, graduate students, and desk attendants.



+ Remain current with trends in developmental education and learning assistance programs; support new initiatives specific to student retention and increasing student access to services.



+ Represent the Office of Learning Services (OLS) on campus committees specific to academic support services.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:







+ Master's degree in STEM, STEM education or closely related field at time of application.



+ One year professional experience teaching developmental and college-level math courses in a college setting.



+ One year experience working in a college tutoring center or as a tutor.



+ Demonstrated success with student retention and persistence initiatives.







Preferred Qualifications:







+ Master's and/or Bachelor's degree in Math or Math Education.



+ Program development, implementation, assessment and evaluation experience.



+ Professional experience with EOP, HEOP, TRIO or related opportunity access programs.



+ Grant writing and development.
