Fitter – Automation Specialist

Location: Plymouth (with opportunities for UK and international travel)

About the Role

We’re looking for a skilled, time-served Fitter with solid experience in automation and a passion for delivering high-quality work. You’ll join a collaborative, forward-thinking team where your technical ability, problem-solving skills and professionalism will help bring innovative automation projects to life.

Based primarily in Plymouth, you’ll also have the chance to work on customer sites across the UK and occasionally overseas—ideal for someone who enjoys variety and hands-on engineering challenges.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a key member of the build and commissioning teams, you will:

  • Assemble and fit automation equipment to a high standard, following logical processes and working efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, understanding limits, fits, and tolerances to ensure precise assembly.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager and Commissioning team to maintain progress and deliver successful project outcomes.
  • Identify risks and key activities during the build stages to ensure smooth assembly phases.
  • Mark up modifications to parts or drawings and record changes accurately in our internal system.
  • Test and challenge equipment to ensure it meets customer specifications ahead of FAT/ECAP or equivalent acceptance stages.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will bring a proactive, solution-focused approach and a commitment to quality. You will:

  • Work towards achieving OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) targets in line with project requirements.
  • Act as Lead Fitter on selected projects, including involvement in commissioning activities.
  • Support the development of apprentices by providing guidance, supervision, and hands-on training while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
  • Travel to customer sites to assist with installation, training, and equipment sign-off.
  • Represent the client professionally on-site, acting as the first point of contact and keeping the Project Manager updated on progress and any arising issues.
  • Adhere to company Safe Systems of Work (SSO) at all times.
