Are you a qualified accountant with a sharp commercial mind and a passion for driving financial performance? We’re looking for an experienced Financial Controller to take ownership of a company’s finance function, partnering closely with the senior leadership team to provide strategic insight and hands-on financial management.

About the Role

This is a key position offering full responsibility for the finance function, including monthly reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and compliance. You'll manage a small team and play a pivotal role in ensuring financial accuracy, cashflow stability, and the integrity of internal processes. The role provides regular exposure to Board-level decision-making and is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic, hands-on environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all aspects of the finance function
  • Prepare detailed monthly management accounts and present key insights to the Board
  • Manage cashflow and prepare short- and long-term forecasts
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes, including statutory accounts and audit preparation
  • Maintain accurate control accounts, balance sheet reconciliations, and journals (prepayments, accruals, depreciation, etc.)
  • Process monthly payroll, tax submissions, and pension contributions
  • Oversee R&D tax claims and Innovate UK claim submissions
  • Ensure VAT compliance and submit quarterly VAT returns
  • Develop financial models for forecasting and variance analysis
  • Liaise with external partners including accountants, HMRC, pension providers, and banks
  • Drive continuous improvement of financial systems, processes, and reporting

What You’ll Bring

  • Fully qualified (ACCA, ACA, or CIMA)
  • Strong understanding of statutory accounts, VAT, WIP, and long-term contract accounting
  • Experience with Sage 50 Accounts and Sage Payroll
  • Excellent Excel skills
  • A detail-oriented approach and ability to meet deadlines
  • Clear, confident communication skills with the ability to explain complex financial matters

Desirable

  • Background in audit or practice
  • Experience working with group structures and Innovate UK projects
