Are you a qualified accountant with a sharp commercial mind and a passion for driving financial performance? We’re looking for an experienced Financial Controller to take ownership of a company’s finance function, partnering closely with the senior leadership team to provide strategic insight and hands-on financial management.
About the Role
This is a key position offering full responsibility for the finance function, including monthly reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and compliance. You'll manage a small team and play a pivotal role in ensuring financial accuracy, cashflow stability, and the integrity of internal processes. The role provides regular exposure to Board-level decision-making and is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic, hands-on environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all aspects of the finance function
- Prepare detailed monthly management accounts and present key insights to the Board
- Manage cashflow and prepare short- and long-term forecasts
- Oversee month-end and year-end close processes, including statutory accounts and audit preparation
- Maintain accurate control accounts, balance sheet reconciliations, and journals (prepayments, accruals, depreciation, etc.)
- Process monthly payroll, tax submissions, and pension contributions
- Oversee R&D tax claims and Innovate UK claim submissions
- Ensure VAT compliance and submit quarterly VAT returns
- Develop financial models for forecasting and variance analysis
- Liaise with external partners including accountants, HMRC, pension providers, and banks
- Drive continuous improvement of financial systems, processes, and reporting
What You’ll Bring
- Fully qualified (ACCA, ACA, or CIMA)
- Strong understanding of statutory accounts, VAT, WIP, and long-term contract accounting
- Experience with Sage 50 Accounts and Sage Payroll
- Excellent Excel skills
- A detail-oriented approach and ability to meet deadlines
- Clear, confident communication skills with the ability to explain complex financial matters
Desirable
- Background in audit or practice
- Experience working with group structures and Innovate UK projects
