Building Control Officer (Career Grade)

Join Oldham Council's Building Control team within the Place and Economic Growth Directorate. We are seeking a Building Control Officer at various career grades to ensure compliance with Building Regulations and associated legislation across the borough. This role offers a structured career path and the opportunity to work on a range of projects from domestic to major developments.
Day-to-Day of the Role:
- Grade 6: Process domestic applications and plans, undertake site inspections, and provide technical advice within competence. Assist with major projects under supervision.
- Grade 7: In addition to Grade 6 duties, process general applications and plans independently, take enforcement action, and support the training of Trainee Building Control Officers.
- Grade 9: Lead on major project applications, manage a portfolio of development sites, and carry out fire safety inspections and audits. Oversee partnered companies’ non-domestic applications and ensure compliance with the Safety at Sports Ground Act.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Education & Qualifications:
- Degree or equivalent in a construction-related discipline. Full membership of RICS/ABE/CIOB is desirable for higher grades.
- Experience:
- Relevant experience in a Building Control service, with exposure to a range of applications. Experience in applying Building Control legislation to complex projects is essential for higher grades.
- Skills & Abilities:
- Strong communication, negotiation, and mediation skills. Ability to provide reasoned technical advice and manage time and workload effectively.
- Knowledge:
- Comprehensive understanding of Building Control legislation, including dangerous buildings and demolition procedures. Knowledge of fire safety inspections/audits and enforcement processes.
