Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) – Out-of-Hours

Location: Newham (various OOH primary care sites / UCC / bases as required)

Hourly Pay

The Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) will work autonomously within the Newham Out-of-Hours (OOH) primary care service, providing high-quality clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients presenting with urgent, undifferentiated, or complex health needs.

This role mirrors the clinical scope of ANPs within GP surgeries while adapting to the rapid-response, time-sensitive, and variable-demand environment of the OOH service. The ANP will manage face-to-face and telephone consultations and work collaboratively with GPs, urgent care teams, NHS 111, and local health partners to ensure safe and effective patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Independently assess, diagnose, and manage patients with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions presenting out of hours.
  • Provide safe and evidence-based prescribing in line with legal and organisational frameworks (non-medical prescribing qualification required).
  • Undertake clinical decision-making for undifferentiated and complex presentations, referring or escalating appropriately.
  • Perform physical examinations, interpret diagnostic tests, and initiate treatment plans.
  • Provide urgent care interventions, including management of minor injuries, infections, respiratory and cardiovascular presentations, abdominal pain, paediatrics, low-level trauma, and exacerbations of long-term conditions.
  • Support the streaming, triage, or clinical validation process depending on service needs.

Key Requirements

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (Adult or Child) with valid NMC registration.
  • Master’s-level qualification in Advanced Clinical Practice (or equivalent portfolio of evidence aligned to the 4 pillars).
  • Independent Non-Medical Prescriber (V300).
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD and clinical skills maintenance.

Experience

  • Significant experience as an ANP in primary care, urgent care, or emergency settings.
  • Competence managing undifferentiated presentations in adults and children.
  • Confident working autonomously during OOH periods with limited on-site support.
  • Experience using NHS clinical systems (e.g., EMIS, Adastra) preferred but not essential.

Skills & Competencies

  • Advanced assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and clinical decision-making.
  • Safe, effective, and evidence-based prescribing.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage high workloads during peak OOH demand.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of safeguarding frameworks (adult and child).
  • Commitment to patient-centred care and service improvement.

What We Offer

  • Competitive hourly rates, including enhanced OOH rates.
  • Flexible shift patterns across evenings, weekends, and nights.
  • Supportive clinical leadership and opportunities for development.
  • Access to training, CPD, and governance sessions.
  • Modern clinical environments within Newham’s OOH network.
