Homes for Independent Living (HIL) is hiring Caregivers / Direct Support Professionals for our physical and/or developmental programs that provide support services to adults to maximize the their independence with daily living activities, developing and maintaining positive self-respect, personal hygiene, health monitoring, social and communication skills, and community integration skills.

Hours: 2nd shift (schedules include every other weekend and some holidays)

Status: Full-time

Essential functions include:

  • Mentor, organize, and/or assist clients in their choices and actions in the areas of 1) daily living activities, 2) developing and maintaining positive self-image, 3) personal hygiene and health monitoring, 4) social and communication skills, 5) functional community skills, 6) recreational activities, and 7) budgeting and planning.
  • Assist clients as needed with maintaining their personal living space, laundry and self-care while promoting the clients abilities to maintain these independently.
  • Assist clients with scheduling activities based on individual preferences to promote a rich social and recreational experience.
  • Administer medications per policy when clients are unable to manage medications independently and promptly report any errors or concerns with medication administration to the Supervisor.
  • Promote client health by teaching clients independence in scheduling, attending, and following up with regularly scheduled and as needed medical care, including reporting medical concerns to guardians and care managers. Monitor clients for illness and injury. Document and report all concerns promptly to Supervisor
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Demonstrate the ability to be a strong mentor to the person supported in learning independent living skills and providing guidance and feedback without diminishing the person’s progress or efforts
  • Maintain self-composure and self-control under stressful conditions. Clients may exhibit physical aggression, challenging, or offensive behaviors.
  • Demonstrate a supportive, caring demeanor with clients
  • Demonstrate ability to work as a single staff person in a program
  • Demonstrate effective written and oral English communication skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Valid Wisconsin Class D driver's license for 3 years with an acceptable driving record per HIL's policy; access to an insured vehicle is strongly preferred
  • Successful completion of a caregiver background check as mandated by Wisconsin Chapter DHS 12
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment TB test and health screen
