Westnet, Inc. is the leader in providing public safety/fire communications to fire departments throughout the country. The Company is seeking a Firmware / Electronics Design Engineer to join our Team, minimum of a Bachelor of Engineering or Software Engineering or similar with 5+ years of electronics design experience. Excellent teamwork and communication skills are essential. Team-oriented individual who will work closely with our information technology, production, installation and technical support departments. Our Hardware/Firmware Engineer team member will be responsible for, but not limited to:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Applying knowledge and principals of electronic theory, design, and engineering to design and develop electronic circuit boards and upgrade existing designs

Plans, improves and manages firmware designs from inception to use

Microcontroller Programming using Microchip Microcontrollers

Microcontroller Programming using Renesas Microcontrollers

Printing wiring board design using CAD tools

Test the prototype hardware modules, using test equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers

Proficient in C programming language

Preparation and creation of technical documentation for hardware and firmware designs

Work with technicians, software developers, and consultant staff as needed

Performs other duties, tasks or projects as requested and assigned by supervisor or management

Job Requirements:


Bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering or software engineering

5+ years’ Experience preferred, no less than 2 -4 years.

Experience with development and testing of microcontroller software using the “C” language

Must have Experience using Microchip PIC microcontrollers

Experience in printed wiring board design, ideally using Orcad/Cadence software


General: Must demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, analytical and organizational skills. Must be self-motivated and detailed oriented.

Technical: Ability to test the hardware modules that the software is running on using test equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers. Experience with a TCP/IP stack running on the microcontroller. Experience in designing microcontroller based modules, which may include analog peripherals such as audio and power supply circuits and CPLD/FPGA designs.

Communication: Exceptional/Strong communication skills both, written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to present idea in business-friendly and user-friendly language. To read, analyze and interpret complex documents, in addition to creating documents.

Teamwork/Team Player Skills: Posses strong commitment to team environment dynamics with the ability to contribute expertise and follow leadership directives at appropriate times. Thrive in a team environment and work well with others. Enjoy working as a team member as well as independently. Someone that can display being a team leader in addition to being a team player.

Mathematical & Reasoning: Strong math skills. Use critical thinking skills to apply logical and analytical thinking to practical and complex problems.

Computer: Programming skills and familiarity with C computer language and some assembly language. Proficient Microsoft Excel Skills; must be able to navigate the internet efficiently. Exposure to software/firmware versioning systems. Has Microsoft Office Suite as well as other industry-specific technology tools used within the organization. (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Physical and Environmental Elements:

Physical Demands: The employee is required to use computer keyboard, telephone and ten-key. Ability to talk and hear continuously.

Vision: Ability to see close range (clear or corrected vision at 20 inches or less), Ability to see at distance (clear or corrected vision at 20 feet or more). Ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point (peripheral vision), Ability to see color, depth perception and ability to focus are high in this position.

Work Environment: Position is typically performed in the office environment with standard equipment and moderate noise levels (examples: computers, printers, fax, copiers, light traffic, and phone) Proper closed toe shoes required especially if working in warehouse environment.

Other Duties:
Keeps good housekeeping, dispose of own trash and help keep company tidy in general.
