Highways Operative

Location: Malpas Depot, Newport, NP205PP

Start Date: ASAP

Contract Duration: 6+ Months

Working Hours: Mon - Fri, 09:00 - 17:00, 37 Hours per week

Pay Rate: £ 13.69 per hour

Responsibilities

Undertake a wide range of general highway maintenance works, including potholing, drainage maintenance, cleaning, litter picking, and working with bituminous materials.

Perform general fencing, grass cutting, basic masonry, concrete/paving, and other similar associated highway work.

Operate all small plant and tools required to undertake these duties.

Carry out basic setting out of work and work to precise levels.

Work safely in accordance with Health & Safety legislation and Council policy.

Operate a wheeled loading shovel.

Maintain basic work records and undertake basic health & safety assessments, recording the information electronically if required.

Participate in winter maintenance duties and standby rota arrangements if required.

Direct the work of other operatives as needed.

Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post.

Person Specification

Able to carry out heavy physical manual duties over prolonged periods.

Capable of working as part of a team and with minimal supervision.

Able to take instructions effectively.

Skilled in operating construction plant, such as rollers, breakers, compactors, and disc cutters.

Willing to undertake training to expand skills base and health & safety awareness.

Possess a minimum standard of literacy to maintain basic work records.

Courteous in dealing with staff and the public.

Proficient in using personal electronic communication equipment.

Accept legal responsibilities for health & safety, including wearing personal protective equipment when required and working safely.

Prepared to wear the designated uniform.

Understand and agree with the principles of Equal Opportunities.
