Outside Technical Sales Engineer

Job Description

The primary duty of a remote outside sales engineer is to prospect new and existing customers and identify a lead or opportunity. Once an opportunity to sell presents itself, work to develop the customer relationship and provide a solution that satisfies both technical and budgetary requirements. This role requires a person to have basic technical skills and highly professional personal skills to present equipment capabilities for management groups, formulate formal quotes and support after sale follow-ups. Within this role a sales engineer will have exclusive access to multiple product lines while also having the ability to work in different manufacturing processes. This promotes a non-limiting sales cycle and the ability to call on multiple industries to drive sales volume.

Measurement, Testing & Quality Assurance equipment within manufacturing facilities. Distribution Line includes Coordinate Measurement Machines, Form Testers, Vision Measurement Machines, Hardness Testers, Hand Gages, Thread Gages, Force Gages. The territory rep will have access to the full line.




o Contacts customers within their territory through cold calls, sales leads, networking and marketing

o Understand product offerings, technical data and become solely responsible for demonstrating products

o Spends at least 80% of their work week “on the road” at or with existing, new or potential customers

o Tracks sales leads within their territory and provides daily/monthly status reports through Sales Force

o Follows up with customers on a regular basis regarding pending orders and new possible sales

o Provides marketing ideas to Sales Manager from his/her Customer Visits for future marketing campaigns

o Generates sales quotations to the customers

o Reviews, evaluates and approves all purchase orders received from the customers

o Any time spent in the office is to be incidental to Outside Sales Activities



To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities satisfactorily. The skills and experience listed below are representative of what is required for the position.



Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Engineering, Technical Field or Business; or a minimum of four years’ experience in Sales, Marketing, Manufacturing, Engineering or Quality, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

A3-6 month training program will be implemented (dependent on experience)

Ability to read and analyze equipment specifications, customer specifications, purchase orders, sales reports and marketing plans. Ability to communicate technical and non-technical issues to people within companies represented by ATI and to ATI customers. As in many sales roles, personal skills and public speaking are key skill sets required to perform in this role.



Ability to calculate profits, commissions and discounts. Ability to follow any normal math involved in customer applications.



Ability to interpret an extensive variety of information to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions to be able to assist customers with answers to problems.

While on the road demonstrating machine capabilities the ability to lift the equipment out of a van (on a sales gurney) is a requirement of this role (<200 lbs).

Since the job requires travel to customer facilities, the work environment can vary from general office or laboratory conditions to a manufacturing environment. Since ATI has no control over what can be encountered at a customer, while performing the duties of this job, the individual can be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level can range from moderate to loud.


ATI Office: 5-10% per Month

Customer Facilities: >80% per Month

Remote Office/Home: 10-15% per Month
