Assistant Rail Manager - North Region Wigan

Location: North England | Full-Time | Competitive Salary + Benefits

Heidelberg Materials is seeking an Assistant Rail Manager to support and enhance our rail logistics operations across the North Aggregates region. This is a development-focused role with on-the-job training, ideal for someone looking to grow in a dynamic, sustainability-driven environment.

What You'll Do:
  • Coordinate daily rail operations across depots and quarries, ensuring timely and efficient stone deliveries
  • Liaise with rail partners, commercial teams, and site managers to forecast demand, plan train movements, and resolve service issues
  • Support depot operations, including staff development, safety improvements, and operational efficiency
  • Monitor and manage rail costs, identifying savings and reducing recharges such as cancellation fees and underloading charges
  • Drive sustainability goals by increasing rail utilisation and reducing reliance on road haulage
  • Assist in strategic planning, including identifying new depot opportunities and optimising wagon capacity in collaboration with freight providers

  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • A proactive, analytical mindset with attention to detail
  • Interest in logistics, sustainability, and continuous improvement
  • Experience in transport, operations, or supply chain (desirable but not essential)
