Job Title: Technical Food Science Assistant


The technical assistant will support the technical manager in maintaining safety, quality and legality across all aspects of the business.  The role will predominantly focus on record keeping and observation of standards of practice in all production and storage areas.  Good interpersonal and mentoring skills are required when guiding staff on best practice and upholding the standards set by the company quality manual.

The technical department is responsible for all practices and procedures relating to food safety and as such the technical assistant will be instrumental in ensuring that the set standards are maintained throughout on a daily basis.  As such, attention to detail across all aspects of the role is an absolute requirement as the technical assistant will be required to check and maintain records to a consistently high standard. 

A working knowledge of the BRC standard is preferred.  However a good understanding of the HACCP system is essential and will be required from the outset.  Above all, the technical assistant will be committed to food safety and understand the need for attention to detail.

Main duties as Technical Assistant:

  • Production process checks
  • Lab sample management
  • Product Specifications
  • Calibration
  • Hygiene monitoring
  • Environmental swabbing
  • Paperwork Audits
  • Temperature monitoring
  • Retained sample assessment
  • Daily label printing/checking
  • Food safety alert summaries
  • Record keeping
  • Supervising deep cleans
  • Oversight on daily cleaning
  • Production of Specifications
  • Delivery of training against the QMS/BRC
  • Updating training programmes in line with legislative changes
  • General admin

Experience desired:

  • Recognised certification / experience of HACCP
  • Understanding of Microbiology and food chemistry
  • Working experience within Food Manufacturing / Food Industry
  • Practical knowledge of the BRC, Food Safety and Food Legislation
  • Understanding of Cimscee for ambient production control
  • Knowledge of chilled, frozen and ambient stable shelf life
