About the Role

Reed Further Education is seeking an experienced, proactive and forward-thinking Health, Safety & Environment Manager to lead a College-wide approach to health, safety, sustainability and statutory estates compliance. This is a high-profile position at the heart of ensuring a safe, sustainable and supportive environment for our students, staff and visitors.

You will be responsible for shaping and delivering the College's strategic vision for Health & Safety, championing a positive safety culture, and leading their route to Net Zero. Working closely with the Director of Facilities & Estates, you will influence decision-making at all levels, ensure legal compliance, and drive continuous improvement across the organisation.

This is an exciting opportunity for a confident HSE professional with substantial experience in a medium to large organisation who can balance strategic leadership with hands-on, operational delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the College’s Health, Safety & Environment function, providing expert advice across the organisation.
  • Develop, implement and monitor the College-wide HSE strategy, ensuring compliance with all statutory requirements.
  • Manage the Health & Safety department, including first aid provision and fire marshal teams.
  • Oversee and continuously improve estates-related statutory compliance in collaboration with the wider Estates Team.
  • Lead the College’s pathway to Net Zero, working with internal and external stakeholders to embed sustainability practices at all levels.
  • Prepare and deliver reports for Executive, Governors and the Health & Safety Committee.
  • Coordinate emergency procedures, drills and compliance testing.
  • Provide H&S training, guidance and support to staff.
  • Lead on internal and external audits, ensuring timely completion and recording of all actions.
  • Oversee H&S systems and processes, including Occupational Health, Environmental Monitoring, PEEPs and the student trips/visits system (Evolve).
  • Promote a safe learning and working environment, ensuring compliance with Safeguarding and Equality & Diversity policies.

About You

Essential

  • A recognised health and safety qualification such as NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and relevant legislation for educational or large public sector settings.
  • Experience of developing and implementing H&S initiatives.
  • Confident communication skills with the ability to influence at a senior level.
  • Experience producing clear, comprehensive reports.
  • Proven experience conducting a broad range of risk assessments.
  • Excellent IT skills (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Strong organisational skills, resilience and the ability to manage competing deadlines.
  • Commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity and flexible working.

Desirable

  • A management qualification or significant leadership experience.
  • Degree-level education or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of sustainability and environmental management practices.
  • Experience in delivering training and presentations.
  • Senior-level experience in a large organisation.

All candidates who register with Reed Further Education will have 2 years’ referencing taken up and will be required to have a DBS check completed. All offers are conditional upon satisfactory background checks.
