What you’ll be doing

In this specialist SEN role, you will support pupils with a range of needs, which may include:

• Autism (ASC)
• Severe or moderate learning difficulties
• Social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH)
• Sensory processing differences
• Communication needs, including non-verbal pupils
• Physical disabilities or mobility requirements

Your role may involve:

• Providing 1:1 support tailored to a child’s individual learning and wellbeing plan.
• Assisting small groups with structured sensory, communication or life-skills activities.
• Using visual aids, Makaton, PECS, or other alternative communication methods (training can be provided).
• Supporting regulation, emotional wellbeing and positive behaviour strategies.
• Helping pupils engage meaningfully in lessons, routines and personalised learning programmes.
• Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, SENCOs and wider school staff.
• Ensuring a calm, safe and encouraging environment where every child feels valued and included.

What we’re looking for

You don’t need school-based SEN experience — what matters most is the right attitude. We’re looking for someone who is:

• Compassionate, patient and calm under pressure
• Able to adapt quickly and think on their feet
• Confident supporting pupils with behaviour, communication or sensory needs
• Comfortable using initiative while working closely within a multidisciplinary team
• Passionate about helping young people overcome barriers and thrive
• Willing to undertake relevant training

Experience in the following areas is highly valued (but not essential):

• Care or residential support
• Mental health support
• Youth work or mentoring
• Personal care or medical needs support
• Autism, SEMH, PMLD or complex needs environments

An Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one) is required.
