Job Title: Technical Sales Engineer
Location: Wakefield

We're looking for a time-served, technically skilled engineer to join a leading machine building and installation business. In a unique Technical Sales Engineer role. This position is perfect for someone from a fitting, maintenance, or design background — someone who wants to move off the tools and into a customer-facing, commercially focused position without leaving their engineering expertise behind.

This isn't a typical sales job. You'll be the technical go-to for clients, someone they can trust for practical, grounded advice. You'll work closely with design and projects teams, respond to customer queries, and manage projects from concept through to commissioning.

Key Responsibilities:

*

Act as the primary point of contact for existing and prospective customers

*

Visit client sites to assess requirements and propose solutions

*

Build trust and rapport through expert technical advice

*

Respond to requests for new machines, upgrades, and spec changes

*

Deliver engineering-led presentations that focus on value, not just price

*

Prepare and deliver quotes based on raw materials, labour hours, and design complexity

*

Create initial CAD layout drawings to support proposals

*

Liaise with internal teams to scope feasibility and timelines

*

Raise orders and track them through to delivery and installation

*

Provide ongoing customer updates throughout the project lifecycle

*

Support re-engagement of previous customers who've gone quiet

*

Identify and target businesses currently using competitors

*

Upsell intelligently through relationship-building and insight

*

Present technical information clearly in Excel and PowerPoint

*

Meet or exceed sales targets through service-focused selling

*

Attend customer meetings both virtually and face-to-face

*

Work closely with the design team to ensure project viability

*

Feed back client insights to help improve future offerings

*

Support site management and commissioning activities when needed

Ideal Background:

*

Time-served fitter, engineer, or maintenance technician

*

Strong hands-on background in machinery or installations

*

Experience with site works, commissioning, RAMS, and technical specs

*

Confident communicator with professional presence

*

Able to handle challenging questions from technically minded clients

*

Competent in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office tools

*

Experience with CAD software for producing basic layouts or concept drawings

*

Strong project awareness and ability to manage delivery timelines

*

Previous experience in technical sales or customer liaison roles preferred

*

A self-starter who takes ownership of their accounts and outcomes

*

Personable, proactive, and trustworthy

A Typical Day Might Include:

Taking a call from a customer requesting a machine spec change or new equipment.

Visiting their site to assess and advise

Returning to the office to prepare a proposal, drawing, and quote

Liaising with engineering and project teams to validate delivery plans

Sending a detailed quote and following up with the client

Reaching out to a dormant customer or competitor account

Booking and attending client meetings to uncover new opportunities

Regularly checking in with active clients to keep them informed

This is a unique opportunity for someone who wants to transition from hands-on work into a role where they can still use their deep technical knowledge to make a commercial impact. Past employees in this role regularly brought in over £150k in project work simply through technical upselling and building long-term client relationships
