COMPANY: NATIONAL TRUST

JOB TYPE: Permanent

SALARY: 16500.00 Annual

Exciting times are ahead at Petworth; we are working to put the heart back into our spaces, enabling us to lift people's spirits through revealing the beauty that is here. We want to make connections across the whole site that resonate strongly with our visitors' lives, we want to create experiences that move, teach and inspire and vitally we want to be important to the widest group of people possible. In order to achieve our future plans we are looking for a dynamic Project Assistant Curator (24 month fixed term post) to support the exciting development of the visitor experience at this very special place.

What it's like to work here

Change is taking place at Petworth House and Park and the team are looking for innovative people to join them. The team is currently working to update the property's visitor experience, raise Petworth's profile and highlight its internationally-renowned collection of pictures and sculpture in the magnificent staterooms. The Assistant Curator role at Petworth is less a training and development role, as the role profile implies and more an opportunity to play a key role in these exciting changes. If you have lots of ideas, energy and ambition, then Petworth House could be the place for you.

What you'll be doing

Working with property staff and a wide range of consultants, including our regional Curator, using your knowledge of places, art and social history you will help us unlock the meaning and relevance of Petworth for our visitors. Informed by knowledge of Spirit of Place and significance, you will support the care of collections and place, identify research and lead a team of volunteer researchers, and contribute to the development of engaging and high quality presentation and interpretation.

Who we're looking for

In order to excel in this role you'll need;

  • A professional qualification or equivalent relevant experience
  • Knowledge across at least one of the following areas: history, art history, architectural history and contemporary art practices
  • Knowledge of the care, interpretation and presentation of buildings and collections
  • An innovative and creative approach to curating
  • Practical experience of working within a gallery, museum or heritage organisation
  • Project advocacy, engaging others in your work and operating in mixed teams which include volunteers
  • Research skills and the ability to communicate and present specialist information to a range of diverse audiences
  • Bringing collections to life in new ways, creating conversation and debate

You will share our aims and ambitions and understand the balance of conservation and access. More than anything, you'll be passionate about understanding and caring for our properties, making places and collections ever more relevant and engaging for our diverse audience.
