Financial Controller - Accountancy Practice East London Up to £85,000

A well-established and growing accountancy practice is seeking a Financial Controller to take ownership of its internal finance function. This is a hands-on, pivotal role suited to a practical and commercially aware finance professional who enjoys working within a team environment while delivering accurate reporting, maintaining strong controls, and supporting strategic decision-making.

Role Responsibilities

• Produce monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet reconciliations, and cashflow reporting.
• Manage the month-end process, ensuring accuracy and timely close.
• Prepare year-end schedules and support with statutory accounts.
• Support budgeting processes and provide clear variance analysis.
• Monitor and manage cashflow, identifying and escalating risks where necessary.
• Oversee billing, credit control, and debtor management, liaising with internal stakeholders.
• Process supplier invoices and manage payment runs, including direct debits.
• Maintain relationships with banks and key suppliers.
• Ensure robust financial controls, reconciliations, and compliance with HMRC requirements.
• Prepare VAT returns, payroll inputs, and other compliance-related tasks.
• Manage purchase ledger processes, including invoice matching, coding, and supplier queries.
• Line manage and support the Finance Administrator, including covering their duties when required.
• Drive improvements in finance systems, processes, and reporting efficiency.
• Provide clear financial insight to support business decisions, including basic modelling and profitability analysis.

Personal Requirements

• Part-qualified, newly qualified (ACCA/CIMA/ACA) or qualified by experience.
• Strong experience producing management accounts and managing cashflow.
• Hands-on approach.
• Solid understanding of financial controls, reconciliations, and compliance.
• Advanced Excel skills (including VLOOKUP) and experience with Xero.
• Confident communicator with the ability to work closely with senior stakeholders.
• Experience managing or mentoring junior staff.
• Recent experience within a UK practice environment.
• Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, or system/process improvements (desirable).
• Familiarity with IRIS or similar systems (desirable).
• Highly organised, detail-oriented, and proactive with a continuous improvement mindset.
