We’re seeking an enabler who can help this 16-year-old boy, or rather young man, to be included socially in a residential play-scheme, a “winter camp” running for six days from December 27, 2019. It isn’t outdoor camping but a conference centre with single-sex dormitories.
The successful candidate is trained and experienced in inclusive play. He or she might have worked for charities such as Fair Play Barnet, IPOP or Ambitious about Autism. The enabler will
- build bridges for the young man so he can engage socially with peers and can participate in activities.
- ensure that the young man follows the camp rules.
- help colleagues and peers to make reasonable adjustments such as explaining things simply, listening to him carefully and giving him occasional rest breaks if necessary.
- help the young man to take breaks during the day if he needs them
- help him to settle at bed-time in this unfamiliar environment.
- travel with the young man on the coach which has been arranged for travel to the camp and home afterwards.
The departure point (at 7:30am on December 27) is somewhere around Elstree, and that is where the group will return and say farewell on January 1. The young man lives in Hendon, so we can offer transport between there and Elstree.
The enabler will respect the young man‘s religious beliefs. He is Jewish. The enabler need not be Jewish.
The enabler will - preferably - be registered with the update service of the Disclosure and Barring Service - or will otherwise be willing to undergo a DBS check. In addition, I’ll need to take up two character references.
This young man is sociable and can express himself speaking English. His speech can be unclear. He also knows some Makaton sign but doesn’t use it much. He enjoys music and dance; theatre; eating and drinking; ball games; walking, climbing and running; movies, especially about animals; playing “Uno”, and playing with computers.
He can think of what is happening, what has happened and what will happen, but he doesn’t fully understand “might” and therefore can’t assess risk. He also finds it difficult to understand that others don’t know what he knows, so he might (for example) go off somewhere without realising that people are worried because they don’t know where he is. Or he might fail to communicate how he feels about something because he doesn’t realise people don’t know.
To apply, please email your cv with a covering note, via the Gumtree site. You can also contact me on my mobile phone or via WhatsApp. I don’t answer my phone or read emails on the Jewish Sabbath: from Friday afternoon till Saturday nightfall. But I’ll get back to you if you leave me a message with your contact details. Please apply by 5pm on Tuesday December 17. I’m interviewing on December 18 and 19
The successful candidate, and others who meet the requirements for the post, might be able to do further enabling work in future months and years, with this young man, possibly in social and leisure settings and possibly in work experience placements.
