We are now seeking a reliable, hardworking, and proactive School Caretaker to join our team and help maintain our lovely school site.

Job Purpose

The School Caretaker is responsible for the maintenance, security, and cleanliness of the school premises and grounds, ensuring a safe and pleasant environment for pupils, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

Premises Management

  • Unlock and lock the school buildings at the beginning and end of the day

  • Carry out routine inspections of the premises and report any maintenance issues

  • Undertake minor repairs and basic maintenance tasks

  • Monitor heating, lighting, and water systems, reporting any faults

Health & Safety

  • Ensure the site complies with health and safety regulations

  • Maintain clear and safe access to buildings and grounds, including gritting paths in icy conditions

  • Conduct regular fire alarm and security checks

Cleaning & Waste Management

  • Carry out ad-hoc cleaning duties and support the cleaning team as needed

  • Manage waste and recycling procedures

  • Ensure cleanliness of external areas, including playgrounds and car parks

General Duties

  • Accept deliveries and move items around the school site

  • Set up furniture and equipment for school events and assemblies

  • Liaise with contractors and supervise them when on-site

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Experience in a similar role or general maintenance

  • Good DIY skills and the ability to carry out basic repairs

  • Strong awareness of health and safety procedures

  • Trustworthy, punctual, and able to work independently

  • Friendly and approachable, with a can-do attitude

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of COSHH and manual handling regulations

  • First aid or health & safety training

  • Previous experience working in a school or educational setting
