Job Purpose

To support the Registered Manager in leading a children's residential home, ensuring high-quality care, regulatory compliance, and team development. In the Registered Manager's absence, you will assume full operational responsibility.

About the Role

You will work closely with the management team to plan and deliver services that meet the needs of vulnerable children and young people. The role involves operational oversight, team leadership, and active involvement in maintaining Ofsted standards.

Key Responsibilities

Support the day-to-day running of the home, ensuring a consistent and safe environment.

*

Lead the team in the Registered Manager's absence, maintaining 24/7 service coverage.

*

Oversee implementation of care plans, risk assessments, and safeguarding protocols.

*

Contribute to the home's development plan and quality assurance framework.

*

Ensure compliance with Children's Homes Regulations 2015 and internal policies.

*

Support inspections and maintain readiness in line with Ofsted frameworks (SCCIF).

*

Supervise and appraise staff; promote a culture of learning and continuous improvement.

*

Contribute to recruitment, rota planning, and effective staff deployment.

*

Manage physical and financial resources in line with service requirements.

*

Promote a safe, nurturing environment that meets children's individual and cultural needs.

*

Support staff with behaviour management and therapeutic care practices.

*

Act as a positive role model for staff and young people.

Person Specification

Qualifications

*

NVQ Level 3 or 4 in Health & Social Care (Children & Young People) - essential.

*

Willingness to undertake Level 5 in Leadership & Management (if not already held).

Experience

*

Minimum 3 years in residential childcare, including 1 year in a senior role.

*

Experience of working in homes rated “Good” or “Outstanding” by Ofsted.

*

Familiarity with children's services for EBD, CSE, or LD is advantageous.

Knowledge

*

Understanding of Children's Homes Regulations 2015 and the Children Act 1989/2004.

*

Knowledge of safeguarding frameworks, including Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018.

*

Awareness of challenges faced by looked-after children and how to support them.

Skills and Abilities

*

Ability to lead, supervise, and motivate a staff team.

*

Strong communication, report writing, and organisational skills.

*

Competent in planning rotas and managing time effectively.

*

Able to maintain professional boundaries and model positive behaviours.

Additional Requirements

*

Full UK driving licence (clean) and access to a vehicle with business insurance.

*

Able to undertake physical intervention (training provided).

*

Willing to work flexible hours, including sleep-ins and emergency cover.
