About The Felix Project

The Felix Project is London's biggest food redistribution charity and the largest end-to-end food redistribution charity in Europe.

Our vision is a London where no one goes hungry and good food is never wasted.

We rescue surplus food from businesses, supermarkets, restaurants and farms. This food is nutritious, in-date, and safe and includes a high proportion of fresh vegetables, fruit, meat and fish. If we did not rescue this food, it would be at risk of going to waste. Instead, we deliver it free of charge to London charities, schools, food banks, COVID food hubs and other organisations serving people in need. Our food is a vital lifeline for children and families, people on low incomes, people who have lost their jobs, the homeless, refugees, domestic abuse survivors, the elderly and keyworkers.

We are a very ambitious and dynamic young charity and we haven’t stopped growing since we were founded in 2016 in memory of Felix Byam Shaw, by his father, entrepreneur Justin Byam Shaw. We recently ran a very high-profile media campaign with the Evening Standard and Independent, raising £10million to feed London. We have celebrity endorsement from Reece James, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Jack Whitehall, Stephen Fry, James May and many others.

Last year we delivered enough food for 21.1 million meals to help people in need. We have continuing major growth plans for the next 4 years, with a target of delivering enough food for 100 million meals by 2024. Because nearly all the food we receive is donated by the food industry and volunteers, every £1 of expenditure redistributes £10 worth of food.&

Purpose of the Job

The Head of People is a key role in the leadership team.& This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced HR and Volunteering Management leader with a passion for working for a charity with a real purpose. The role is diverse, and the skillset matches this.& You will have positive influencing skills, both within the leadership team and throughout the people community. The ideal candidate will be innovative, creative, a confident people practitioner, and passionate about making a difference and driving our one team culture and the people experience.

Your main goal will be to drive Felix forward as an employer of choice and continue developing an excellent volunteer experience. You will execute the people strategy to promote a high performance culture that supports the charity’s business needs and long term strategic goals.

This will include the continued development and implementation of a proactive human resources function to provide a comprehensive range of HR services and activities.

Duties and Accountabilities


Delivery of the current people strategy, ensuring best practice Volunteer and Employee excellence, supporting the delivery of our goals, and ensuring consistency and value-added support in all areas
Values & culture - you'll be responsible for facilitating how our culture and values are represented and aligned through our communities and beneficiaries.
Strategic people projects – you will be responsible for implementing our People & Culture Development aligned with our goals and alongside the Leadership Team.&
Work closely with the incoming Director of People & Culture to provide insights and key information to help shape the refreshed organisational design and workforce development strategy.
Ensure successful execution of a robust and successful volunteer journey to ensure engagement throughout the full people life cycle. You will provide the best possible start and ongoing experience for everyone that supports us through their skills and time.
Coaching and providing guidance and advice to managers on people and organisational related matters, like change management, development, wellbeing, culture and engagement, excellence in performance, as well as providing guidance on technical aspects of employment such as pay and contracts.
Stewarding our EDI work to enable an inclusive environment across our volunteer and employee community, ensuring this also reflects the communities we exist to serve.
Learning & Development – oversee the design and delivery of a program to ensure all of our people have the tools they need to succeed, for both their personal and professional development.
You will play a leadership role in the development of our new apprenticeship/employability programme
Overseeing our burgeoning internal communications programme to ensure all our people feel included and consulted
Work closely with the CEO and the Senior Management Team to ensure a robust approach to HRM is in place for all paid staff.
Line management and leadership of the People team (currently 7 direct and indirect reports)

Essential skills/knowledge relevant to this role&


Significant experience in a people and culture development role - HRM experience is essential to the role
Leadership – strong leader able to manage a diverse and growing team, work with senior managers across the charity to influence, coach, and deliver change, and be able to operate successfully with trustees and other senior leaders.
Strong understanding and experience building HRM programmes – able to build on the foundations set up over the last 18 months to take the charity to the next level in terms of HR processes & systems, exploring options to use new tech to make us more efficient.
Excellent ability to prioritise and multitask – this role involves juggling multiple competing priorities and the ability to respond to urgent situations across HR and volunteering.
Strong performance and reporting skills – able to set and monitor budgets, report to Board and Sub-Committees, lead on people evaluation, and help refine People data and metrics.
Ability to transfer knowledge to volunteering – you don’t have to have significant volunteer management or strategy experience as we have many foundations in place and a strong team, however, you will need to be able to apply your people skills to the volunteer context and understand the unique requirements and challenges of working with volunteers.
Experience managing internal communications programmes, including familiarity with intranet and/or other tech engagement tools
Experience introducing and working with new tech solutions.
Ability to think strategically, and confident and comfortable communicating ideas.
Strong conflict resolution skills.

Desirable skills/knowledge relevant to this role&


Understanding of apprenticeship or employability or other education/training programmes
Experience of volunteering – either from a volunteer or volunteer management perspective
CIPD (or equivalent) qualified.

You will be working in an upbeat, innovative charity with strong vision, ambition and a fantastic culture and team.& This role may be located at either our Park Royal (W3 0RU) or Poplar (E14 7BN), with regular travel across our other locations as well as home working. The salary is £45,000-50,000 per annum (dependant on experience), 25 days annual leave + bank holidays.
