CNC Machine Build & Machining Engineer

Role Overview

This role involves working on highly integrated, multi-axis ultra-precision machines and motion systems, equipped with intelligent control solutions that often incorporate optical imaging, precision position sensing, and laser-based technologies.

The position is for a multi-skilled CNC Machine Build & Machining Engineer, this is a hybrid position, combining approximately 20% CNC machining Mill-Turn (production and prototype work) with 80% machine building, maintenance, and technical development which will be supported with training. 

Your expertise is in CNC machining, this role will offer you the opportunity, training, and support to expand your skills and the financial support to further your education. You will typically work within a small, collaborative team, though there will be occasions where you will work independently and liaise directly with high-technology customers.

Key Responsibilities:

Machine Build & Maintenance (80%) - Full Training Provided
Collaborate with design engineers to refine mechanical, electrical, and control system specifications for the new CNC machine.
Select and integrate motion control systems, spindles, drives, linear guides, and tool changers.
Manage procurement of components, materials, and sub-assemblies.
Carry out hands-on mechanical and electrical assembly of the CNC machine.
Integrate CNC control hardware, wiring, and safety systems.
Calibrate and align systems to sub-micron tolerances.
Troubleshoot and resolve build, control, and operational issues.
Perform planned preventive maintenance and breakdown repairs on CNC equipment.
CNC Machining (20%)
Operate CNC mill-turn machines to produce high-precision components for prototypes, test parts, and customer orders.
Create and optimise CNC programmes (Hypermill, Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, or equivalent).
Select tooling, set up workholding, and verify programmes through dry runs and trial cuts.
Work to ultra-tight tolerances using both conventional and advanced metrology equipment.
Provide machining input to aid machine design and commissioning.
Maintain accurate records of build progress, test results, and maintenance schedules.
Essential Experience:
Proven experience in CNC Mill or Turn machining, programming, setting, and operating.
Strong knowledge of CNC programming languages (Hypermill, Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, or similar).
Experience in CNC machine tool build, retrofit, or integration projects (Advantageous)
Determination to solve engineering challenges and expand your skills into new areas.
Qualifications:
HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent experience. (*Development opportunities to upskill your degree or qualifications*)
Recognised CNC programming and machining qualifications.
18th Edition Wiring Regulations (desirable)
