Job Overview:

Islington Council is seeking a proactive and skilled Diagnostic Surveyor to join their Housing Repairs team on a 3+ month contract. The successful candidate will be responsible for diagnosing building defects in tenants' homes, specifying remedial actions, and managing the repair process from start to finish. This role is essential to ensuring high-quality, safe, and habitable living conditions for residents.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Visit tenants' homes to inspect, diagnose and assess building defects, including damp, mould, and condensation.

  • Recommend and specify appropriate remedial actions using the NHF Schedule of Rates or bespoke specifications.

  • Prepare clear, professional technical reports and present findings to internal stakeholders, including the High Value Repair Panel.

  • Manage complex cases such as structural failures, subsidence, and insurance claims (e.g., fire, flood, and collision).

  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures related to repairs and disrepair cases.

  • Maintain accurate electronic records of all inspections, work orders, and case progress.

  • Oversee the quality of repairs through on-site monitoring and post-completion inspections.

  • Collaborate with legal and internal teams on disrepair claims and policy updates.

  • Ensure all work complies with current building regulations, health & safety legislation, and council standards.

  • Attend meetings as required, including occasional out-of-hours.


Essential Skills & Experience:
  • Strong ability to diagnose a wide range of building defects and recommend effective remedial solutions.

  • Good understanding of building pathology, particularly in relation to damp, mould, and condensation.

  • Experience producing specifications of work using schedules of rates.

  • Organised and self-motivated, with the ability to manage a busy calendar and caseload independently.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to liaise effectively with tenants, contractors, and internal teams.

  • Competent in producing technical reports and using housing repair management systems.


Desirable:
  • Surveying or construction-related qualification (HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent - not essential).

  • Previous experience working in a social housing environment (preferred but not essential).


Additional Information:
  • This role is office-based with regular travel to tenants' homes and sites across the borough.

  • Pool vehicles are available for site visits.

  • You'll be working in a collaborative and fast-paced environment focused on improving housing standards for residents.
