A Marine Pipe-fitter is to capable of planning, layout, fabricating, assembling, installing, repairing, and modifying piping systems, and pipe assemblies requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness on ships, boats, barges and other floating marine equipment. The craftsman must possess the ability to perform threading, soldering, gluing, welding and/or brazing of pipe and fittings. The Pipe-fitter must be able to properly use the tools of his/her trade such as wrenches, power threading equipment, power band saws, levels and other common hand tools. The shipyard Pipe fitter must have one year of experience, must be a high school graduate or hold a GED, and must have successfully completed the applicable union journeyman's program. When completing welding/brazing the Pipe fitter must be certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) when performing welding/brazing on jobs requiring ABS inspection and approval.
